American classmates : Seriously? What languages?
Me : Oh it's English, Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese.
American classmates : Wow that's so cool! People usually speak in Spanish and English. And yours are a bunch of random languages!
Me (os) : Random languages? Oh well....
In another icebreaker activity in another class:
TA : What is your first historical memory?
American Classmate A : September 11
TA : Whose first historical memory is not 911?
American Classmate B : The death of princess Diana
Me : The independence of Malaysia, as I am from Malaysia.
American Classmate C : No wonder I have never heard of it.
p/s: the way TA asked us about 9/11 is so assumptive. But there it shows the importance of 9/11 in American's psychological development.
